Do I snore? How to find out for sure
You can't hear yourself snore, because you're asleep when it happens. The reliable way to find out, without relying on somebody else, is to record a night and listen to it. Clues like a dry mouth or a partner's complaint tell you something is going on; a recording tells you what, when, and how often.

How common snoring is
Very. About 45% of adults snore at least occasionally, and about 25% snore habitually [1]. So if you suspect you do, the odds are already on your side.
Clues that you might snore
None of these proves it, but each is a reason to check:
- Somebody has told you, or left the room in the night.
- You wake with a dry mouth or a sore throat.
- You sometimes wake yourself with a snort.
- You snore more after drinking, when you have a cold, or when you fall asleep on your back, which are all common triggers [2].
When your partner says you snore
They're usually right, but a partner hears only the part of the night they're awake for, and they can't tell you whether it's every night or only some. A few recorded nights settle both questions, and give you something to play back rather than argue about.
Why one night isn't enough
One night is a snapshot. Alcohol, a cold, a late meal or sleeping on your back can change a single night a lot [2]. Record a few ordinary nights before drawing any conclusion, and note what was different about each.
When snoring is more than snoring
Most snoring is harmless. It's worth talking to a doctor if you're told you stop breathing or gasp in your sleep, or you're very sleepy during the day [2]. Our guide to snoring or sleep apnea explains the difference.

Find out with Snorezy
Put your iPhone beside the bed and start a recording. In the morning Snorezy shows how much of the night you snored, when, and how strongly relative to your room, and lets you play the loudest and longest moments. You don't have to listen to eight hours of audio.

Questions
Can my iPhone tell if I snore?
Yes, if an app records the night and looks for snoring in the audio. Snorezy does this on the iPhone and keeps the moments it finds so you can listen to them.
How many nights should I record?
At least a few ordinary nights. Snoring changes with alcohol, congestion and sleeping position, so one night can mislead in either direction.
